We are building FoodPrint, a low-tech digital food supply chain platform for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa to digitally participate in food value chains, and directly connect with buyers and other participants.
Using our low-tech WhatsApp chatbot, smallholder farmers capture their harvest and sales data onto the blockchain, which gives them a credible production record that unlocks access to previously inaccessible markets and services. By anchoring on the Algorand blockchain, we obtain a single source of truth that is transparent, traceable and positions smallholder farmers to participate in the digital economy.
Our tech stack makes use of Node.js (Express), MySQL, GitHub, Python (Django), AlgoSDK (we integrate with the Algorand blockchain) and Heroku. We are developing Mandla Money, a suite of mobile blockchain-enabled financial products to improve financial inclusion, and boost economic participation of unbanked and underbanked individuals in sub-Saharan Africa. Mandla Money’s pioneering product is the Mandla Wallet, which allows users to send and receive digital currencies such as Stellar’s Lumens, Ripple’s XRP and Algorand’s Algo digital assets via WhatsApp or SMS in a fast and affordable manner. In the future, we plan on supporting central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) once they are launched by African central banks (think along the lines of a digital South African Rand for example).
